First rant of the year

What? You expected me to ease you in gently? Bless you, you're pretty.

So this is the deal, I've had a little time off recently and while I have been chilling out with my head buried in Christmas pudding, (Fat girl CRACK, I tell you) up has popped a couple of blogging GURUS telling us how to run our blogs.

Now I am ALLLLLLLL for bloggers being so far up their own arse that they just fill their blogs with instructions on how to have a blog as successful as theirs. Honestly, every time I see one it just fills my cold, dead heart with (misery, anger) joy.

Because, what there isn't enough of in this world, is people telling us how to do something we are already doing.

Blogging isn't an ART, sorry, it isn't. Anyone can write crap on a page and if it appeals to someone, they will read it, and possibly come back for more (No, not you, you guys are special)

The "secret"" to blogging?

There isn't one.

If you write it, they will come.

People can only tell you what works for THEM. Not what works for you,

And if you take on board what every blog "guru" tells you to do, all you become is a weak imitation of them.

Right now? You are the real deal. Be original, be unique, be YOU.

Advice is fine, but who wants to be TOLD what to do?

Not me. How about you?

Let me know.

  1. Hear Hear! BUT there are a few basic steps that DO actually help like resizing images, enabling mobile templates and shit like that! And more bloggers than not don't actually get that each of their 3MB pics makes their website slow and shit and not userfriendly at all. but wait! when you do educate them, they throw it back in your bloody face and rather hand out their own useless more-than-common-sense advice! idjits!

  2. I luv you. But can you tell me where to find this wisdom? I might not be doing it right, I've only been blogging nine years...

  3. Very well said, but what I will say is that there's so many people blogging these days, they put the idea in people's head that there IS a magic formula, all too often I see People tweeting asking how to get followers, how to get readers, how to blog properly... And probably the most irritating one 'what post would you like to see'. Blogging is about free speech right? Bloggers should be bloggers and not some slave to their readers.

Blog what you want and people will read, it won't happen overnight but it will happen if you wait. :-)

  4. Someone who described themselves as a ''guru'' once told me: ''Do this, that and this to your blog, and you will gain readership''. The minute I was told that = I unfollowed! My blog is MY blog, I do as a please with it, and I certainly won't be told what to put on it and so forth. It's mega mega annoying; by all means offer constructive advice and etc, but sometimes it can be borderline patronising!

^^Agree with Jade - blog what you want, it's a free country, everyone has a voice and the entitlement to voice that as and how they wish.

  5. Completely agree hun. I'd be interested to know what sparked this rant though? I'm guessing I missed something on twitter!!

  6. What kills me about some of these blogging "gurus" is the stunning hypocrisy of a couple of them. It's all "do as I say, not as I do". They blithely and almost continuously put snide little lists of how to behave on their blogs, aimed at both the industry and other bloggers (with the subtext of "behave yourselves, bitches!") and you just know that they are being complete and utter bitches themselves!

It all adds to the divisive atmosphere around.

  7. This post has been long awaited! I am tired of others thinking they know best and can tell everyone else what to do!

A blog should be run by you, for you. If it happens to appeal to others too - even better!

  8. Totally agree with you on that! I read this blog post on 'how not to run a blog' a few months back and they tried to sound all hilarious but it just made them sound like an utter twat, aha.

  9. Ah I think I missed something as I haven't seen anything like that recently! Practical tips are helpful (and I could do with taking some time to learn about CSS and Meta) but your blog itself, the content, the style, is individual.

  10. Love you. I don't even read those posts anymore. Can't be arsed to stick to 'rules' or not. If someone doesn't like the look of my blog or the way I post, there's a very handy wee 'X' up there in the top right.

  11. Crikey! If we all followed a text-book guide on blogging, we'd all look and sound the same!

  12. I felt this way when I read last months copy of Company. Tell us all about how to blog! Err no thanks. Put it straight in the recycling!!

  14. we think they are ass****'s and make fun but seriously we think 2013 could be the year the word outreach is banned and so called expert's & guru's get exposed as the money grubbing cowboys they are

  15. I think the secret to blogging is to do it ;) Thanks K you always help me to give me a bit more oomph.

  16. I find it hilarious when 'successful' bloggers offer 'tips' but then proceed to publish dozens of misspellings of gifted items on their site... SPELL CHECK ANYONE?! What a joke.

  17. Haha, I love this! So true, there seem to be a growing number of blogging 'experts' out there!

  18. Guru is a ridiculous word. Expert is a little easier to quantify, but if you use it about yourself you better have the goods to back it up. Helping hand to a noob is always welcome, re practical stuff, as sites like Blogger seem hellbent on being as secretive and unhelpful as possible. I think I'm not a noob anymore, but I'm definitely still trying to find my style, and actually would appreciate feedback and help with a lot of stuff. I guess if experts are approaching already successful bloggers, what they're actually trying to do is cyphon some of that blogs traffic or readership? The mind boggles. Lovely to be able to read these posts again though, and Happy New Year!

  19. I love this post. I am tired of bloggers acting as if your blog is only good enough if you write it a certain way or write about certain things!! Ixx

  20. Heheee. Love this post - I just went through some blogs that got spoiled with freebies from every major fashion house. They all said, be real, be yourself. I kept thinking, what just post pics of me in bed eating crisps being yelled at by the hubby for leaving crumbs? Will that get me a free Valentino bag?

  21. How did I miss this?! Epic post! Maybe you should be a Guru?!

Seriously though?! The people who go to these nobodies are in it for all the wrong reasons! A blog is personal, you're saying it because you have something to say. If you have nothing to say, don't say something to fill the gap! That is the problem! All a guru could say would be 'write something more interesting'. There is a reason I don't write posts about how I spent last weekend painting my faded white ceiling, white again! BECAUSE NO ONE CARES!

Maybe I will become a Guru but instead of advise, i'll just speak a very painful truth!
