Her name was Reeva Steenkamp

Reeva Steenkamp.

That was her name. Her name was not, "Oscar's model girlfriend" "Oscars lover" or even "FHM model"

Her name was Reeva Steenkamp and she is dead.

I don't know what happened on February 14th, and it is not my place to speculate. It is not amusing, or fodder for some has-been comedians to practice their one-liners on social media networks.

Reeva Steenkamp lost her life.

She deserves her name to be used, not just pictures of her in bikinis.

What do you think?

  1. I read the article about it on the BBC website. I then read the article on A N Other news page. Yes, I put traffic their way. I'm sorry. But what I saw was just... Well, yeah.

She's dead. I don't want to see her tweets about how excited she was to spend Valentines day with Oscar.

Even more, I don't want to see pictures of her in a bikini, or in any form of undress.

    How is this appropriate?

  2. Couldn't agree more. Her death is tragic, but public reaction to it has been horrible and shameful. From initial reactions of "what did she do?" To the press' reduction of her from person to possession, it should shock and scare us all that this woman's death is being reported and discussed with less compassion than would be given to the departing of a long standing soap opera character.

  3. Completely and utterly agree. It is horrifying to me that she has been turned into an object, she was someones friend and daughter, she deserves to remembered for that and not just as someones girlfriend. Until we know all the facts it is not our place to speculate, to place blame or to trawl back through previous interviews with Oscar and jump to conclusions.

  4. Totally agree seeing pictures of her in her bikini in the papers just seemed wrong, selling papers with the picture of someone who has died, awful.

  5. Agreed. I've been seeing so many 'jokes' and I just think it's terrible. What s wrong with people? There is nothing funny about it.

  6. Yes, let's remember to keep her dignity as a human being intact. Her fate is very traumatic and let us all remember how terribly sad that is.

  7. The Sun newspaper is real gutter press. Nothing it publishes should surprise us. What surprises me is how many people buy it.
That said, the death of Reeva Steenkamp is only front page news because she was Oscar Pistorius's girlfriend. That makes her death no less or more tragic. It just makes it newsworthy.

  8. i havent see the papers yet but from what the news was saying it seems there was a history of issues there even in their short relationship.

it is not going to get any lighter - it is going to get darker and things are going to come out - people are already saying Oscar was a bit of an on the edge sort of guy.

All i can say is that the biggest death rates for murder for women is caused by their partner. this is the brutal truth - i just something positive can come out of this and women learn to see the signs way before anything horrible like this happens again.

My prayers go out to her and her family...

  9. Oh my goodness, completely well said. I was absolutely horrified when jokes were littering my twitter feed and facebook timeline - people are just unbelievable. The treatment of Reeva Steenkamp in the papers has been absolutely appalling and you've summed it up perfectly x

  10. I could not refrain from commenting. Perfectly written!

  11. Fucking well said, who cares what she did! That poor women was taken from the world, it makes me so angry that her dick of a boyfriend is getting away with it. He shot her four times in the head! Her poor family and friends are left to pick up the pieces and I think if it were my daughter, I would want respect not .....Oscar anything.

Makes me so mad, great post xx
