The Great Leggings Debate
I am curvy/fat/plus size/on the large size (delete as applicable) and I wear leggings.
(Why do I feel as if I have just stood up and confessed to an addiction?)
Now I understand that there are some people out there that think leggings should be banned, (along with Uggs, and Crocs) and I'll be honest with you, I am not okay with this. (although the Crocs can go) I LOVE my leggings.
Now obviously I make sure that my leggings are not see-through, seriously, no-one wants to see my Elmo knickers, (That's a whole other blog post) and leggings that are so thin you can see if I have shaved my legs or not (Newsflash, I probably haven't) are also on my "Oh hell no" list, but take away my leggings and you are probably taking away a major chunk of my wardrobe. I am yet to give a stuff about what is the latest, greatest most fashion-y thing that I can wear anyway and Vogue are not going to be snapping me in the street anytime soon, I am a 37 yr old mother of three and if I want to wear leggings, then I bloody well will.
If I am wearing leggings, then it is usually with a long jumper or T-shirt, (there will be no leggings induced camel-toe here, thank you very much) I own some fantastic New Look leggings which are a galaxy inspired print, some floral leggings and yes, some plain black leggings for when I want to just be comfortable (And a stretchy waistband is always a bonus, you know you cannot argue with me there) but if you take away my leggings, then there will be days when I would be hard-pressed to find something to wear!!!!
So my burning question of the day is this,
Leggings,
Evil, or just misunderstood?
Do you wear leggings? How do you feel if you do about being judged for wearing them?
Let me know.

I'm a legging wearer and proud!
ReplyDeleteBe PROUD.
DeleteI practically live in leggings these days, I wear them with short dresses instead of tights which really are evil. Also nice to know I'm not the only grown woman with Elmo knickers!
ReplyDeleteEveryone loves a pair of Elmo knickers.
DeleteSurely the sin is wearing leggings which are too small/too thin/reveal too much?
ReplyDeleteI don't wear them, but have just picked up a pair of footless tights for wearing under dresses in the summer :-)
Whispers, aren't footless tights, leggings? ;-)
DeleteUp until 6 months ago I wore trousers everyday to work as hated tights and am not girly enough for dresses. Then had an epiphany that leggings would work. In last 6 months I've worn trousers 5 times max. Wear dresses with leggings now. Totally different look and feeling to wearing tights.
ReplyDeleteI wear leggings almost every day with dresses instead of tights. I work with children so wearing leggings means I can bend over/sit on the floor without flashing!
ReplyDeleteI only wear leggings with short dresses in the summer and that's it. Never with anything else or at any other time. Oh, apart from a pair I wear to bed with a vest top.
ReplyDeleteI refuse to wear 3/4 length leggings as I think they make people's legs look stunted and I hate the denim skirt/leggings combo that a lot of the school runners wear. It just doesn't look right....soz and all that.
However, if you want to wear leggings, wear leggings. Sod the haters like me. As long as they're not see-through and there's no camel-toe, it's all good.
Oh yes, 3/4 leggings do absolutely nothing for me. AND I still have to shave my legs! Kind of defeats the object if you ask me!!!
DeleteExactly my point!
DeleteI live in leggings. Leggings with short dresses. Leggings with jumper dresses. Leggings with long t-shirts, and those things that might be a dress if you're 17 with legs like twiglets, but only just cover my arse. You can take my leggings away when you pry them from my cold dead bum cheeks.
ReplyDeleteIf they take away the leggings then your bumcheeks will be cold!
DeleteAnother leggings devotee here. I also abide by the no camel toe or bum on show rule when I'm wearing leggings. No on needs to see that!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely no-one.
DeleteI love love love leggings, I wear them probably every other day!
ReplyDeleteBut my rule (that I think should be law) is,
'I don't care what size you are, If you wouldn't wear it with tights, don't wear it with leggings'
I do not want to see anybody's camel toe, skinny arse, saggy bum, cellulite, gunt, bare midriff, overhang or thigh gap. And nobody wants to see any of my junk either!! :)
I did see someone wearing tights with an average length jumper recently!! I saw everything not pleasant or necessary ha
DeleteI adore leggings. They are comfy, go with nigh on everything I own and I wear them 95% of the time (unless I'm at work, cept in winter when I wear them under my trousers, I know, I'm odd)
ReplyDeleteI never wear pale coloured leggings though, always dark colours :) And always with a long top or dress.
I love one of the above comments! I love leggings what I hate is seeing ass or camel toe as most have started. I think as long as leggings are worn without showing the world your underwear most women love wearing them! Xx
ReplyDeleteIf you can see the colour of your knickers then you're wearing footless tights.
ReplyDeleteLove leggings from the none smelly fungal feet side, cotton socks worn on my tootsies
And with my job they're practical for going barefoot without blinding everyone with my dazzling white legs.
I love my leggings! My leather ones are perfect dressed up with some heels!
ReplyDeleteAs long as they are decent quality and no one can see through them I think they're brilliant!

I never ever wore leggings until a year ago, now you can't get me out of them! I was very fat before, you see, so even with a long jumper I wouldn't have dared, but now I've lost over 6 stone they look great. I'm 57 this Friday and I don't think I'm too old - in fact, I think they look very smart with the right tunic top.
ReplyDeleteNever too old Claire, first person who tells me I am too old to do ANyTHING gets bitchslapped into the next county. ;-)
DeleteAnd congrats on the weightloss. That's brilliant
Blimey, well done Claire!
Deleteyes they do look smart with the right top :D
and no, no one is ever too old to do anything or wear what they want.
I too am a curvy specimen and I wear leggings, particularly with dresses that I feel are a little too short for bare legs or sheer hose (I sound like my granny)
ReplyDeleteThey are comfy, warm, and I think they look great, as long as I have somethng to cover my considerable arse, no one needs to see that in leggings, or anything else for that matter.
I LOVE my leggings. Especially as I am 6 months pregnant so they are about all I can fit into! Also a big fan of the harem pant! xx
ReplyDeleteit is one of those things that i like wearing but i don't necessarily like looking at when people watching. so there is a double standard!
ReplyDeleteNo to Uggs and Crocks: yes to leggings! They can be dressed up or dressed down. I also wore them to bed once (like Bag of Bees) but found I was so overheated! (Like wearing a boiler suit!) I'd definately suggest that anyone who's not tried them give it a go as it really opens up your wardrobe possibilities.
ReplyDeleteI love leggings I wear them all year round, great in the winter with boots and jumpers or warm dresses then at this time of year with a dress and flats. My one personal rule is to always cover my bum and tum when I wear them but beyond that leggings rule!
ReplyDeleteI hate leggings, I always feel like they're trying to crawl up my arse and I don't feel like I've anything on my bottom half when I wear them. Saying that, if I felt like wearing them, I'd wear them, simple as that, if someone thinks they're unflattering on me, tough shit. Shouldn't be looking at my crotch anyway.
ReplyDeleteSo long as you're not inflicting your camel toe on the world I don't see what the big fuss is about leggings. I wear them sometimes around the house because they're just so comfy!
ReplyDeleteSaying that a girl I lived with last year insisted on wearing black leggings worn as trousers with a short top/t-shirt around 6 days a week, and although she's really slim I could still see she had a camel toe every so often. It wasn't cool.
Wow, leggings is a controversial issue! I love em, and wear them with tops, jumpers, but do have a bit of an issue with leggings and dresses. Wear tights. A x
ReplyDeletehttp://becomingraje.blogspot.co.uk/
leggings as trousers: no no
ReplyDeleteleggings as tights: yes, regularly
Leggings for the win. Love them, comfiest thing to slob in, especially ice high waisted ones, but only with tunics/dresses for me!
ReplyDeleteToday I saw someone wearing 3/4 length leggings over natural coloured tights. That fried my brain.
ReplyDeleteI love leggings, as long as they are opaque and the right size. I see no point in someone squeezing into leggings 2 sizes too small, it looks ridic and no-one can see the bloody size label anyway!
I wear leggings daily and the way I see it is, as long as my foolala is covered up, then it's OK. I wear leggings with knee length dresses, so unless I have a vaginal prolapse or something, there'll be no minge out. Oh, by the way - why wear tights when you can wear leggings?! Everyone knows that tights = minge sweat. Ugh ugh UGH. x x
ReplyDeleteI also wear leggings as tights - less.. umm.. sweaty.
ReplyDeleteAgree with all your points re leggings. Wear then as thick tights, giving an option if a shorter "dress" and they are fine. However
ReplyDeleteI wear crocs, when you are a disabled hippy who is camping they are a blessing. So :-p
Uggs, though. Gross
I love leggings. and I too wear them instead of tights, in close fitting dresses, they suck you in better ;)

I adore my leggings! I'm plus size too and find them super comfy and ideal to go with dresses and long tops (avoiding the camel toe issue of course!). They're so much more comfy than tights!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love my leggings, i'm a size 16/18 and I really could not care less about what people think about me. I'm comfy as hell as that's all i'm bothered about!!

I love leggings I am a size 20 and have just found the PBL perfect black leggings by Venus Cow they are amazing comfy and make me fee thinner.
ReplyDeleteIf you took away my leggings I'd be hard pressed to know what to wear too, why I created my PBL for real women with real bodies. I loved reading all your comments from fellow legging enthusiasts.
