Spring Cleaning: Top Tips for a Declutter

With the New Year here, it is now a perfect time to start thinking about giving your house a spring clean, with many people opting to do it sooner rather than later. The onslaught of new Christmas gifts will have to find a home somewhere and, in many homes, if you don’t have a little organisation, there won’t be anywhere to store any new additions! Give your life a little spring clean for 2014, starting with decluttering your home. Here are some top tips to help get you started.

Clothing
The bigger your family, the more clothes you will have to contend with and if you’re not careful, you will end up up to your neck in laundry and too many clothes for your hangers. Starting with the wardrobes in your home can help to make a little more space so that all your clothing can have a proper home. Kids grow what feels like constantly, so it’s up to you to stay on top of their wardrobes and make sure that you clear out anything that’s getting a little small. While women’s clothing doesn’t tend to be outgrown, you’ll almost definitely be able to sort out your wardrobe too. A lot of women are good at hoarding clothing ‘just in case’ and, while some items do warrant keeping hold of, if you’re not careful, you could end up with a mountain of clothes you don’t wear, and nowhere to store them. The same applies for a lot of guys, too!
What you don’t need anymore, you can donate to charity or make a little money from by selling on eBay. Alternatively, grab a few vac-packs and pop some things into your loft out of the way, especially if you’re not going to wear them very often – this is particularly handy for eveningwear and out-of-season clothes.
Another great benefit to having a clear out of old, out of style or tatty clothing is that you’re making space for some lovely new men and women’s clothing to ring the fashion changes of a new year!

Toys
If there’s one thing that can easily take over a family home, it’s toys; even moreso at Christmas when the children will have piles more to find a home for! Take this opportunity to be out with the old and in with the new. Maximise storage space, using shelves and drawers to keep toys tidy and encourage the kids to give up things that they don’t play with anymore. There are plenty of great storage solutions available that can create the illusion of more space in bedrooms, living rooms and elsewhere.

Use Compartments
This is particularly useful in dressing tables, underwear drawers and bedside cabinets. Using drawer dividers will help you to stay a little more organised – make up, toiletries, socks, etc – if you have a compartment for them to be homed in, you’ll be more likely to be able to locate things when needed!

Bundle Same Things Together
Use plastic storage boxes that are stackable to store things such as crafts, cables and art supplies in the same place. Label them appropriately and choose transparent boxes so that you can see what’s inside. This is particularly useful for children’s art supplies – use separate boxes for paints, playdoh, craft items, crayons and paper so that you can access what’s needed whenever you need it.

Reclaim your home this year and get some order! Declutter sooner rather than later and, while it may seem a little daunting, it’ll totally be worth it when you’re enjoying a neat and tidy home in the new year.
